Letters: In Defense Of Charter Schools

The charter school mistake

(Los Angeles Times) Also October 5, 2013 Re "The charter mistake," Opinion, Oct. 1 To say I am disappointed by Diane Ravitch's Op-Ed article is an understatement. Many of her assertions regarding charter schools are offensive to the parents and educators who have created some amazing charters. The fact remains: Los Angeles parents are choosing charter schools in high numbers, and they are producing academic results for students. As independent, tuition-free public schools, charters disproportionately serve low-income students incredibly well. Charters are accountable to taxpayers and the state and federal government for results.

In so doing, theyll highlight a key issue in this years mayoral race: whether New York City will side with kids and push for good schools or side with unions and keep rotten ones going. Yes, the city has seen rallies before. But usually these have been secretly organized by the teachers unions or their allies. Not Tuesday. Congressman Cantor To Speak At Philly Charter School

Related Stories Cantor embarked on a school tour earlier this year in which he pushed for a policy which he claims outlines elements of a policy agenda that places less emphasis on federal budget math and more on education. Cantor will tour the Freire Charter School high school campus located at 2027 Chestnut Street beginning at 9 a.m. He is scheduled to speak at 10 a.m. Helen Gym, a member of ParentsUnited, a volunteer group made up of parents of public school students, criticized the congressman as well as his stance on school choice. "Cantor supports a false notion of choice," she wrote on her Twitter page. "To defund public schools and give parents "choice" among an erratic range of charters." In 2011, Congressman Cantor was scheduled to appear at UPenns Wharton School of Business to deliver a public speech on the American Dream and Economic Growth. Cantor canceled his speech after members of Occupy Philadelphia as well as Penn and Temple students marched from City Hall to the Penn campus in protest. Occupy members claimed the purpose of the march was to bring awareness of corporate greed to Congressman Eric Cantor. Prior to the scheduled appearance, Cantor made headlines when he stated he was increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and other cities across the country. Cantor later backed away from those comments but still claimed the Occupy movement was divisive and pitted Americans against other Americans.

Adding more desks to D.C.?s charter schools

So the Districts decision to make Charles E. Young and other shuttered schools available to public charters is to be applauded even if it doesnt help those students who missed out on educational opportunities because of the citys previous reluctance to provide space to charters. Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) announced Wednesday that Two Rivers and another highly acclaimed public charter school, KIPP DC , will enter into long-term leases for the two public school buildings. The award of the historic Young facility to Two Rivers and the former Hamilton School to KIPP DC is an important step by the District government in helping charters solve whats been a chronic shortage of appropriate classroom space.

Charter schools are underperforming Public schools

Here are the facts: The National Charter School Study by Stanford Universitys Center for Research on Educational Outcomes (CREDO) is the gold standard for comparing the performance of charter schools and public schools. CREDO released its original study four years ago and released an updated version yesterday. In both studies, neighborhood public schools win over charter schools hands down. But charter schools are improvingfrom very bad to mediocre: In 2009, 37% of charter schools performed worse than the neighborhood public school and only 17% did better. Now 31% do worse than the neighborhood school while 29% do better.

"Trombetta directed Avanti to purchase a plane (which he uses far more than anyone else), to purchase his luxury vacation home in Florida (which he still uses), to purchase his former girlfriend's residence, and to purchase at least one vehicle for his personal use," the agents wrote. He also had an Avanti credit card, they wrote. "During the spring break season of 2012 Trombetta required Avanti to pay for air transportation for Trombetta's daughter and two friends to travel to the [Florida] condo for spring break," the agents wrote. He also used the the property to entertain personnel from Franciscan University of Steubenville, from which he was seeking a contract, they wrote. He used the plane in part to travel with friends to Steelers away games, according to the affidavit. He instructed Avanti to buy a home in Mingo Junction, Ohio, for "his then girlfriend, Kelli Dicarlo," the agents wrote.
